Rerouting of off-peak journeys

Since the 27 January 2014, all off-peak Monday to Saturday journeys have called additionally at Hey Farm Estate. This change sees Oldham bound journeys pass the Dysarts Arms before turning left into Moorlands Drive, before returning to Huddersfield Road and joining Manchester Road. All Hyde bound 343s after turning onto Huddersfield Road now turn right onto Moorlands Drive before continuing to Micklehurst.

Before late January, residents on the Hey Farm Estate have had to change for the 343, 353, 354 or train at Bottom Mossley for Stalybridge. A journey to Hyde or Dukinfield meant changing at Ashton-under-Lyne. Today, you can now stay on the 343 after boarding at Moorlands Drive, which is a good thing, unless you’re travelling on Sundays, Bank Holidays or evenings.

Evening journeys operated by First Greater Manchester still use the 1980 route and are unaffected by the above changes.

1720 Oldham – Dukinfield journey curtailed

From the 28 January 2013, First Greater Manchester’s 1720 journey from Oldham Bus Station to Dukinfield (Albion Hotel/Boyd’s Walk) will be curtailed. Instead of terminating at Dukinfield, which it has done since April 2007, it will instead terminate at Mossley railway station with no change to times along that section.

Passengers continuing to Micklehurst will need to change at Top Mossley for the 350, whereas Stalybridge passengers must change at Mossley railway station for the 353/354 or opt for Northern Rail’s service to Manchester Victoria. There is also the 408 service; the nearest one to the affected 1720 journey departs at 1743.

Dukinfield passengers will either be forced to change at Ashton-under-Lyne (catching the 409 from Oldham) for 41, 330, 335, 345 and 346 services or wait another 30 minutes for the next 343, which is Stott’s of Oldham’s 1750 journey.

Snow stifles operations

Unless you’ve been on Mars for the last few days, you may well have read about the adverse weather conditions facing the Tameside area. As a consequence, this has had an adverse effect on road conditions and of course, bus and rail services. The 343 is of course no exception. Read the rest of this entry »

Postponed route revision reinstated

After a gap of nearly two years, Carrbrook Village will be reconnected to the 343 route on a Monday to Friday basis. Following requests from residents forced to change at the Buckton Castle for Top Mossley and beyond, this will save them the joys of getting a 348 or S48 that will connect with the 343 itself. A further change to the route involves the addition of new links to Roaches and Hey Farm. Read the rest of this entry »

The 343 route has a fair number of pubs along its route which feature or have featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. From the 2010 edition of the Good Beer Guide are the following public houses: Read the rest of this entry »

Greetings all, lovers of local bus routes around Stalybridge and Hyde. Welcome to this new blog dedicated to the 343 bus route from Oldham to Mossley and Hyde. Having been a long term user of this route myself, I thought that it deserved its own spot in cyberspace.

As the 343 has seen countless changes over its lifetime, I thought that the service needed some extra publicity. Its unique selling point is being the only bus to link all four constituents of the former SHMD Joint Board (Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Board). This means due reference to leisure facilities along the route from playing fields to public houses.

There will also be reference to service changes affecting the route including frequencies and fares. Future posts may include reference to other 343 buses around the UK and Europe. In time, this will become a useful resource for the Hyde to Mossley and Oldham.

Enjoy the ride,
